Formula Suggestions

Let us know which new formula you would like to see included in MedCalc or how we can enhance existing formulas.

  1. Improvement to allowable blood loss formula

The allowable blood loss formula doesn't address adjustments for obese patients, who may have a blood volume of 40 ml/kg or lower. It would be wonderful if the MedCalc formula incorporated the results of "Estimating Blood Volume in Obese and Morbidly Obese Patients," Lemmens et al Obesity Surgery 2006 Jun;16(6):773-6. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=estimating%20blood%20volume%20in%20obese%20and%20morbidly%20obese%20patients)

Thank you for making and maintaining MedCalc - it is a fantastic, easy-to-use resource for practice and teaching!

  11. FINDRISC or CANRISK

Finnish well validated screening score for diabetes risk
Canadian screening score/calculator for diabetes risk
From the Canadian Task Force on Preventative Med:
FINDRISC (the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score) has been selected as the preferred validated risk calculator, but CANRISK (the Canadian Diabetes Risk Assessment Questionnaire) is an acceptable alternative. Factors considered in FINDRISC and CANRISK are age, obesity, history of elevated glucose levels, history of hypertension, family history of diabetes, limited activity levels, and diet with limited intake of fruits and vegetables. The CANRISK questionnaire can be found via the PHAC website or here:
    http://canadiantaskforce.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Clinitian-Combined_FR-FINAL.pdf?9d7bd4
    (Some people call it findrisk)

  15. FiO2 estimation for low-flow O2 in neonates

Neonates with chronic lung disease often require oxygen in the neonatal intensive care unit. The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the actual inspired oxygen concentration (F1O2) delivered to neonates when using a low-flow flowmeter and a nasal cannula, and (2) the accuracy with which F1O2 could be estimated using a formula that we developed. We studied two groups of infants: 18 infants less than 1,500 g and 13 infants greater than 1,500 g. We measured pharyngeal oxygen levels by sampling pharyngeal gas in infants receiving 100% humidified oxygen by nasal cannula from a low range flow flowmeter.…
